With the competition to provide the best mobile devices in the market hots up, we take aquick look at two of the major players in the SoC (system on chip) arena. Previously, the first generation of the Snapdragon chips were common in phones like HD2, Nexus One, and Evo 4G providing what was considered at the time to be great performance. However, with the advancement in technology, a new generation of the Snapdragon chips known as the Qualcomm Snapdragon has been developed to step up the possibilities for applications in phones.

Unlike the NVIDIA Tegra 2, the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip is developed not to use the processor based on the ARM-designed chip. However, the application has a Qualcomm designed the core that have several features to improves its functionality. Unlike the last Snapdragon chips generation from Nexus One which depended on the 65nm process tech, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon allows phones to increase their performance. They can now use the 45nm technology that has more transistors.

Like the Snapdragon, Tegra 2 has to upgrade its applications. Intel have just laid bare the full specifications of their latest offerings in the battle for tablet based CPU's. More accurately these components are called SoC's or Systems on Chip because they are in fact a complete system.

The two Intel Atom branded SoC's are the Z650 and the Z670. The big brother of the two, the Z670 has a whopping 1500 MHZ clock speed with a tiny 3W TDP. Remember this includes an on-chip GPU as well.

Have a look at the full specifications of the Atom Z650 and Z670. The difference is that the junior model is clocked at 1200MHZ. Which-Laptop.com rate both SoC equally for energy efficiency at 100%. The best rating any CPU (SoC) can get. For comparison purposes the iPad 2 CPU gets 96%.

Despite the recent announcement the Z670 is already being used by Samsung in their soon to be released and rather nifty looking Samsung PC 7.

The hardware inside the Acer Iconia is way above that in a conventional tablet although at the same time it is a little bit dated. Not only, like the Samsung series 7, does the Iconia not know what it is but it also has the more serious problem of not knowing who is meant to use it. But I still want one.

The i3-380m CPU is likely one of the last processors from Intel before they all finally move to the much hailed Sandy Bridge architecture. With recent announcements like an ultra-budget Celeron Sandy Bridge CPU it seems that it really is a case of out with the old and in with the new.

Certainly Sandy Bridge brings with it great improvements but the original i3s, I think, are a long way away from their sell by date, this is one of the best and because of its imminent replacements are turning up in some absolute bargain laptops.

The i3-380m CPU from Intel is at the top of the bottom. The i3 series is clearly aimed at all but the cheapest of laptops but this model, bar one other (the 390m) is the top. As a result you might find it in surprisingly high performing laptops.

There are a number of reasons for this. First up is that it has the integrated memory controller typical to all the i3, i5 and i7 series CPUs. This makes the CPU more efficient and therefore more powerful than some CPUs with apparently higher specifications.

For example the i3 380m easily outperforms all but the most extreme Core 2 Duo CPUs we used to hear so much about a few years ago. In large part it is this integrated memory controller that takes the credit. By having the circuits that control the flow of data, actually on the CPU, rather than in a separate logic unit significantly decreases the age old technology problem of the memory bottleneck.

Add to this a greatly improved GPU, again built on to the CPU and you have a winning combination. If you are buying an entry level laptop, perhaps for a student or the kids, rest assured they will easily be able to indulge in smooth playing multi-media and entry level gaming as well with the i3 380m.

So I guess as Intel announce the death of the first mobile i7 it won't be long before the i3 follows and is replaced probably by the i3-2xxx but for the laptop bargain hunter the time is ripe for some great deals.

Add to this the presence of Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR and you can see that although not an abundance of options what is there has been carefully selected.

This laptop is Dark Blue and Grey and Slim and stylish looking. Cool, modern, pleasing color scheme. The SAMSUNG RF711 laptop uses Windows 7 Home Premium editionand comes bundled with Samsung Support Center, Samsung Fast Start, Battery Life Extender, CyberLink YouCam.

For the ful review of the Samsung RF711 or read on for a quick summary. The GPU is not for hardcore gamers as it uses the comparitively slow DDR3 memory indtead of faster GDDR memory. However, combined with the 2630qm CPU it will be more than adequate for reasonable gaming. I think Samsung have got a really well specified laptop in the RF711. It would have been nice to see a better GPU in here but everything is made to a price. And for what you get at a release price of GBP 999 it is probably the best at time of writing for a media creator and good but not great gamer.

Review of the Dell XPS 15 laptop

The current XPS 15 from Dell certainly looks good. It has a really well constructed appearance, prominent and adequate looking vents to keep it cool and it wouldn't look out of place on the passenger seat of a Mustang. The options for CPU are, as often with Dell, far ranging.

The top spec i7-840qm is the one in the configuration now being reviewed but you could save around $400 by opting for the still OK i5-460m. Good choices here. Read the full Dell XPS 15 review.

The Dell Precision M6500 is a workstation replacement laptop. A sort of desktop replacement for computer aided designers (CAD), engineering, graphics and animators. The price is extraordinairy compared to most of the laptops we review but that is because of its specialist components. Like the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 GPU.

This review is for the top bundle pack W11M6503 with some significant enhancements like the top CPU, dual SSD hard drives etc. However even without the enhancements the base price was £3983 . So this laptop workstation is clearly for the niche professional with very demanding requirements.

The NVIDIA 310m GPU in the Samsung q430 is by no means a gamers GPU but it does have dedicated memory and it will play many (but not all) current games in low-medium quality settings. This laptop could be a good find if you enjoy a bit of gaming on the side. The keyboard isn't perfect and probably not for the long report writer also the media card reader is only a 3in1 but this might not bother you.

Acer Aspire Ethos 5943G-7748G64Wnss

This laptop is Black and Grey and we think Not the best looking laptop but you shouldn't expect that from Acer. It looks OK, modern and clean.

The screen, for me is a bit of a dissapointment also. A mere 1366x768 screen resolution in conjunction with a Blu-Ray player is a bit silly and if playing super-high quality movies is a very big deal for you, then I would look elsewhere.

On a positive note if gaming, above the basics, but not at the very expensive Alienware end is what you want then take a close look at the full review of the Acer Aspire Ethos 5943G-7748G64Wnss. The otherwise dissapointing screen resolution doesn't make much difference here because most modern games on this GPU won't run on high details at a higher res anyway. Also, even with the DDR3 GPU memory it still packs a punch above most GPUs you can get in mid-price laptops.

ASUS X52F-EX571V laptop review

Look at the design and the specs. It is apparent the ASUS X52F-EX571V will not be winning any awards. But look closer and compare what you get for the price and it looks more attractive than the yuck brown design.

I am a big fan of the Intel i3, i5 and i7 series CPUs. One of the reasons is the Intel HD graphics support built in. I will never forget the moment I took off from London Heathrow with smooth graphics at 1024x768 res using just an i3 and this graphics card. This is where we think it would be best used and how good we think it will be at it

If a low price is important
For someone who has limited requirements like word processing, web surfing or other light user needs
For somebody looking to create their own media files like, video or music
For the user who needs decent portability

This doesn't mean the X52F-EX571V cannot be used for anything else but have a read of this full review to make sure if it is suitable for your intended use or not.

Comet PLC boss Hugh Harvey Rogue policies claim

Here is an excerpt from a well known laptop forum:

I cannot believe what has just happened.

Got a laptop on-line from www.comet.co.uk and decide to take it back to store because I wasn't happy with it. They said I could do this when I spoke to them before ordering.

First the store tells me they will not take it back and when I insist they say they must 'search my hard drive to make sure I have not put any illegal images on it before they can process the refund!'

I almost smacked him one but held my nerve. He then called some guy over who proceeded to look at my browsing history before giving me a refund. All this happened in front of a queue of customers at the customer service desk. I thought I was going to explode with embarrassment. They made me feel like a criminal.

What can I do about this. And I don't mean just make a complaint. Is this legal?

It cant be for real. We all know that big company bosses are profit focused but if the suggestions are even close to the truth then nobody will ever buy a Comet PLC share again. And Sir Hugh, Is he a Sir? I suspect he wants to be. Will be lucky if he ever works again.

My gut feeling is that somebody smart enough to run a modern PLC does not get personally involved in this manner.

This laptop is a good buy. OK it is a little cheap looking but it is also a rather cheerful laptop. The Satellite C655-S5119has got some nice features for the price.

A DVD writer, great quality keyboard and a budget yet very new CPU, the Pentium P6100.
